Deepak Obhrai enters federal Conservative leadership race

A Calgary MP has now formally entered the race to replace Stephen Harper as leader of the federal Conservative Party.

Deepak Obhrai submitted his paperwork, including a hefty leadership fee, to the party Tuesday.

He’s the longest serving MP in the party, and in the past, has stood up against some measures his own government tried to pass.

Most notably, he coined the phrase ‘”A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian,” in 2014 when he questioned the Conservatives’ Bill C-54, saying it went against the Canadian principle of all citizens being equal, no matter what.

Obhrai is likely to face a number of other candidates, with four already throwing their hat in the ring, including Tony Clement and Kellie Leitch.
