Residents of hardest hit Fort McMurray neighbourhoods allowed to return

It’s a day of celebration for some 440 households in Fort McMurray.

For the first time since being driven out by wildfires in May, residents in a couple of the hardest hit areas will be allowed into their communities permanently.

It’s been a long time coming for residents in Abasand and Beacon Hill, according to Sarah Anderson, Reporter at Rock 97.9, and Country 93.3.

“They were crying. They were so relieved that they’re able to get home. That’s how close this is for a lot of people, how fresh,” she said.

She says unfortunately, more than 230 homes will remain blocked off in the city until all debris from the fire is removed, which could still be a month away.

Residents across the city also received some good news Tuesday night: Wood Buffalo council voted in favour of tax relief.

The $2.3-million program means residents don’t owe taxes for the month of May when they weren’t allowed in the city.

There will also be further relief for those who were forced from their homes for a longer period of time.
