Chestermere crafts new Municipal Development Plan to guide next 25 years

Chestermere City Council has approved a new Municipal Development Plan to guide how it looks at building and attracting new residents and businesses over the next 25 years.

The idea has been a long time in the works and something where they looked to current residents for their input.

“This document was fundamentally created through the guidance of our current residents and it will be in place to create a fantastic community for our future residents,” Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews told 660 NEWS. “We’ve increased our density from 5 to 7 units per gross acre to an average of about 8 and that aligns more with the Calgary Regional Partnership and our commitment to a future mix of housing and public service efficiencies and conserves land.”

Matthews says staff will take this document into consideration with any future plans or building.

In a news release, town officials say the final document will consolidate research and consultation to describe a vision of what the city will look like in 2040.

They’re expecting the population will hit 50,000 by that time frame.

“The vision is one of a connected and natural environment where residents have safe access to parks, shops and work. Streets and communities will encourage all forms of transportation (walking, biking driving and transit) to reduce environmental impact.”

“We are one of the best untapped business opportunities in the Calgary region,” said Jean-Marc Lacasse, Chestermere’s Economic Development Manager. “The MDP updates make it easier and more appealing for new business to come and succeed in Chestermere.”

The new changes take effect immediately.
