Calgary chef killed in Hwy 9 crash mourned as ‘salt of the earth’ person

Condolences are pouring in for a well-known Calgary chef.

Jonathan Sobol has been identified as one of the victims of a deadly crash on Highway 9 near Irricana.

Sobol was the executive chef at Starbelly Kitchen & Lounge, a gourmet restaurant in the southeast community of Seton.

The eatery issued a statement:

Another man killed in the crash has not been identified.

Sobol grew up in the northern community of Fairview, and graduated from SAIT.

He spent years working at the former 17th Ave. restaurant Farm before moving on to Starbelly.

Food writer Dan Clapson said this is a huge loss the culinary community.

“A lot of chefs nowadays can be chasing 10,000 Instagram followers and just want to be Food Network famous like tomorrow, and Jonathan was just such a good example of somebody who just really loved what they did and just wanted to educate other people and put out something great,” he said.

He described Sobol as a ‘salt of the earth’ kind of person and one of the nicest chefs he’s ever met.

Clapson added Sobol had been concentrating on his youth gardening program and raising money to build community playgrounds.
