Coaldale RCMP detachment evacuated after a stick of dynamite brought into station

A block of Coaldale, including the RCMP detachment was cordoned off after a member of the public stumbled across a stick of dynamite.

They brought it into the station to have it disposed of and Mounties immediately put their explosive protocol in place.

It was left on the outside of the building as they waited for the Explosives Unit to arrive from Edmonton.

No one was injured.

Corporal Hal Turnbull says they took the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both the police and public alike.

“Once they get there, they (the Explosives Unit) have their own protocol to follow so this is something that we can’t put a time on or a set schedule, it’s going to be very fluid,” he said. “Something like this you’re going to treat with the utmost of care, whether it’s a single stick or ten sticks, the same protocol is going to be followed. The main thing is to ensure the people of Coaldale and the detachment area is safe.”

RCMP reinforcements later arrived from Edmonton and were able to diffuse the situation.

They were able to re-open 20th Avevenue just after 8:30 Friday night, more than six hours after the threat was called in by the local detachment.

Officials are urging the public, should you come across dynamite on your property, leave it alone and call police to have it removed.
