Calgary Stampeders honour Canadian Olympians

The Calgary Stampeders are paying tribute to a group of Canadian Olympians this weekend.

Geordie Macleod Senior Director of Game Presentation Events and Community Relations says the athletes will take part in pre-game ceremonies including the coin toss before kickoff on Sunday.

“So we’re hosting six Canadian athletes who just finished competing in Rio. That’s Jessica O’Connell from athletics, Maria Bernard from athletics as well, Yuri Kisil who competed in the swimming Jay Blankenau who competed in volley ball, and then Jasmine Mian from wrestling and of course one of our gold medalist Erica Wiebe from wrestling as well.” he said.

Macleod says they wanted to honour these amazing athletes.

“Calgary Sports and Entertainment we provide a pretty big platform for acknowledging these athletes we think they deserve all of that and more, so the fact that we had a game in reasonably close proximity to the end of the Olympics and one that was really successful for Team Canada it was kind of a no brainer.”

The Stamps are going up against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 5 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.
