Global Affairs says one Canadian killed, one injured in Italian earthquake

OTTAWA – Global Affairs Canada says at least one Canadian was killed and another was injured during this week’s devastating earthquake in central Italy.

The department is not revealing the identities of the two Canadians or where they are from, citing privacy concerns.

Italy’s civil protection agency says 250 people were killed and at least 365 injured when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy in the early morning hours Wednesday.

It’s unknown how many people remain trapped beneath the rubble. Officials say 72 Canadians were registered as being in the area when the earthquake struck, though they did not say whether any Canadians are missing.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion offered condolences to the families of those killed. He says he has spoken with his Italian counterpart to express Canada’s support if needed.

The earthquake was the deadliest to strike Italy since 2009, when a tremor killed more than 300 people.
