Four routes to chose from at Calgary’s Ride the Road tour

A Calgary cycling group is challenging people to pull their bikes out for an urban tour of the city.

This Sunday is the Tour of Alberta Ride the Road event, with four separate routes.

Many of the routes have a police escort to ensure the safety of riders of all ages and skill levels, a treatment Tour de Nuit Society Executive Director Gary Beaton said is usually reserved for prime ministers, queens and presidents.

“Many of these people will drive these roads daily, but it’s completely different where you’re on a bike,” he said.

As of Wednesday, the Environment Canada forecasts rain for this weekend’s event, but Beaton said a few showers aren’t going to put the brakes on the tours, which even ran during 2013’s flood weather.

“That was extremely cold and extremely wet, and for the three dozen who showed up when it was raining cats and dogs and ice cubes, well I commend them for that,” he said. “But it can’t be that bad, maybe it will be a little spring rain.”

People can find registration times and routes here.

The ride will be followed by entertainment and family activities at Stanley Park.
