Calgary fifth most liveable city in the world

Calgary remains one of the most liveable cities in the world, despite an ongoing economic slump.

We’re number five in the latest Global Liveability Ranking, put out by the Economic Intelligence Unit.

We share the honour with Adelaide, Australia.

While low oil prices may be driving up our unemployment rate, it hasn’t affected the stability of our city, according to the EIU. And, Calgarians seem to agree.

Josine says it’s only a temporary situation. “It’s kind of rough right now, but I mean it should get better any time soon,” she said.

Russ feels Calgary deserves its spot on the list. “I was born here so I’m a Calgarian through and through,” he said. “You know, I like the work here, I like the people and the atmosphere. It’s alright.”

Safety is a big factor, as the study looks at rates of terror, military conflict, civil unrest, along with petty and violent crime.

Sydney, Australia was dropped out of the top ten over fears about terrorism, and attacks in Paris also lowered its ranking.

Cowtown received top marks for healthcare and education, with a little room to improve on infrastructure and culture and environment – though not much can be done about the sometimes wild weather.

Three Canadian cities made the top five: Toronto is number four, and Vancouver landed the number three spot.

The most liveable city in the world is Melbourne, Australia, for the sixth year in a row, with Vienna, Austria in second.
