First Link program gets more funding to support dementia patients

A program that helps people living with dementia and their families has been expanded.

Husband and caregiver John Shyluk says the First Link program has helped him connect his ailing wife to programs offered in the city.

“During her day out, it gave me time off. Some respite to attend to personal matters. Perhaps go out and have lunch or coffee with a friend or just go home and rest,” Shyluk said.

The Alberta government announced $2 million over the next three years to support the expansion.

Dr. David Hogan, a physician in Calgary, said this an important addition.

“We may not be able to deal with all of their support and education needs and making that linkage, the Alzheimer’s Society will be a crucial, vital step to ensure that we are providing the care that we should provide to those dealing with this condition,” he explained.

Since 2013, the program has been offered in six cities in Alberta.
