8th Annual Ride to Conquer Cancer exceeds goal

The 8th edition of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer kicked off at Canada Olympic Park Saturday morning.

Just over 14 hundred cyclists are taking part, whether they’ve had a loved one who has battled the disease or they’re fighting it themselves.

Myka Osinchuk, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation tells 660 NEWS, over the first seven years of the ride they raised $54 million.

“The funds raised from this ride are very, very important in helping us do the work that we do and make an impact for Albertans. The money goes to things like clinical trials which help us provide answers to questions that will let us improve treatment for cancer patients,” says Osinchuck.

Despite the challenges with the economic downturn, Osinchuk says they have managed to push past the $60 million mark this year.

“Cancer doesn’t care what the price of oil is or that the economy is bad, 43 people still hear those words ‘you have cancer’ every day,” says Osinchuk.

The nearly 220 kilometre bike ride began at Canada Olympic Park at 7 a.m. with riders heading south on highway 22. camping overnight in Okotoks and then heading back to Calgary Sunday morning.
