Wildfire risk may be low but campers can’t be complacent

Alberta provincial officials say the wildfire risk may be low but that doesn’t mean we can’t be complacent when heading out doors this long weekend.

According to the latest figures, the Calgary forested area remains under a low to moderate risk due to recent rain.

“The weather’s been pretty consistent and we’re looking at the same kind of conditions this weekend. Some nice warm temperatures, some sporadic thunderstorms popping up and maybe a bit of rain but overall what that’s given us a nice low hazard,” says Wildfire Information Officer Matthew Anderson.

Anderson says they like people to be careful when they’re out there so it’s best to keep fires small, manageable and doused with water one you leave the site.

Calgary itself has seen two small lightning sparked fires given recent instability in the region.

“Our whole region is pretty much the same, as you know it started off pretty crazy but we’re actually in really good shape. We’ll still be out patrolling and watching for abandoned campfires.”

The maximum penalty for burning a fire without undue care and attention is $5,000 for individuals and corporations.
