Fire crews are mopping up after a fire in a home in the north-east Thursday afternoon.
Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke says crews arrived to a fully engulfed home with thick smoke coming out of the windows in the 100 block of Costa Mesa Close around 3 p.m. Thursday.
“The house was fully involved inside fire crews did an initial attack however had to be pulled out of the house due to safety issues because the floor was compromised so that structural integrity was gone and it would be unsafe to continue to fight the fire from inside.” Henke said.
Henke adds it was a neighbor who called in the blaze.
“Eight people live in the home, two adults and six children everybody made it out safely, however there were two cats in the house, an adult cat and a kitten, fire fighters did find the adult cat and it was taken to the vet clinic however the kitten is unaccounted for.”
Crews were able to keep the flames away from neighboring houses but smoke did get inside some of them so they will have to be ventilated.
An investigation to determine a cause is underway.
