Calgary Police Chief talks of excessive force with Police Commission

Calgary Police Chief Roger Chaffin defended his decision to wait in front of the Police Commission Monday afternoon in responding to a viral video of his officers.

It surfaced during Stampede week and viewers called into question the actions of the CPS, some saying they used “excessive force.”

Chaffin says many of his officers are now concerned in this day and age of technology, they’ll be called into question during arrests.

“The realities of any time a force situation of force occurs is something we’re going to have to talk to communities about because these things haven’t been seen before and the way they’re being see now, what context they’re in, the few seconds they’re being shot in the middle, the beginning or the end of the situation certainly beg for more discussion.”

He says his first priority as chief remains ensuring the public has confidence in the Calgary Police Service.
