Alberta warns of people to beware of bears gorging on bumper berry crop

KANANASKIS, Alta. – The Alberta government has issued a bear warning for the popular Kananaskis recreation area west of Calgary.

Alberta Parks says due to an excellent berry crop there is an increased chance of encountering bears on trails or near park facilities.

Earlier this month nearby Banff National Park issued a similar warning, advising people that both black and grizzly bears are easy to surprise when they are busy eating berries.

Park staff say berry bushes are found throughout the area often bordering trails, roads and campgrounds.

Last week a woman was bitten on the arm by a mother grizzly trying to protect her cubs at a backcountry campground northwest of Calgary.
