Secondary suites once again a frustrating topic for city council

After the lunch break Monday, secondary suites were on the agenda at city hall. Council was hoping to take a step forward but after a debate of over two hours, there was not a single change.

A plebiscite put forward by Ward 10 Councillor Andre Chabot was shut down and Chabot wishes council would have approved his plan.

“We could have approved hundreds of secondary suites in less time then we debated whether or not we would wave the fee again and do you know how much that is going to cost? We heard five thousand per application roughly, one hundred suites would be five hundred thousand dollars, we would quickly recover the costs of the plebiscite, just with one hundred suites,”Chabot said.

Chabot added he is done trying with secondary suites and won’t be making any more suggestions.

Ward 12 Councillor Shane Keating says the problem with the secondary suite debate is with every single councillor, it’s their way or the highway and he calls it a frustrating process.

“The rock is sitting at the top of the hill and no matter what you do, you can’t budge it, and that’s the unfortunate part, it has to move one way or the other. Once again we had people changing votes, voting on one side and then voting on the other side depending on what motion or what wording was there. It’s difficult, it’s frustrating,” Keating said.

He adds, he doesn’t see anything changing anytime soon and thinks council will continue down this path of wasting time discussing secondary suites.
