Family of three uninjured after Edgemont home struck by lightning

A family of three is staying with neighbours after their 3 storey home was struck by lightning over the dinner hour Monday.

It happened around 6:30pm in the 200 block of Edgeridge View NW.

Fire officials say ATCO and ENMAX crews were being called in to shut the gas and electricity off to the property.

“Crews arrived to find there was a ruptured gas leak and it occurred because of a lightning strike,” said Battallion Chief Stu Laird. “There were three people at home at the time, two adults and a child, they did self-evacuate prior to Calgary Fire’s arrival.”

First responders found a light haze of smoke and a smell of electrical burning after surveying the structure.

“They’ve since discovered there’s a hole in the roof as a result of the strike,” he said.

Damage estimates are still unclear.

“At this point, we’re still under investigation so it would be very difficult for me to hazard a guess on anything like that because you have to be able to follow the pathways through the electrical, check the panel and there was some charring on the panel. That’s why we have the investigator, he will go there and give a damage estimate for that.”

Laird says they’re grateful no one was hurt and their first goal is protection of life.

“We’re just trying to stabilize the scene and preserve as much of their property and make sure there’s no extension or fire behind any of the walls.
