Grizzly attack near Cochrane sends woman to hospital

A 25-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after being bitten in the arm by a grizzly bear sow.

Paramedics and RCMP were called to the M.D. of Bighorn, near the Trappers Hill Campground, at around 12:00 p.m. Tuesday.

“A man that was with her [the victim] scared the bear away,” Brendan Cox, spokesman for Alberta Fish & Wildlife, explained. “Officers are on scene and they are closing the area to further investigate. It’s possible that it was a defensive encounter and that they surprised each other, but further details have yet to be determined.”

The sow had two cubs with her.

Cochrane RCMP say there are a number of public and off-road camping sites off of Highway 40, near the campground.
