Changes coming to province’s beer markup regulation

The Alberta government is serving brewers with a consistent beer markup price.

Starting August 5th, for every litre of beer sold, $1.25 will go to the government, regardless of the size of the company.

Before the move, it was $0.10 up to $1.25 depending on how much was sold and now Alberta’s rate will be the same with most of the rest of country, except for B.C. and Saskatchewan.

“We expect the Alberta brewing scene is going to grow and expand,” said Terry Rock, executive director of the Alberta Small Brewers Association. “This move only helps us move that further down the road.”

The NDP said there will also be a grant program for small brewers, with more details to be released soon.

Rock said he doesn’t expect brewers to be worse off in the future.

It’s not all good reviews though; the move is being heavily criticized by the Canadian Taxpayers Association.

The Wildrose Party is also slamming the move.
