Contaminated water advisory issued for Elbow River in city limits

Alberta Health Services wants Calgarians to avoid contact with the Elbow River.

Due to high levels of fecal coliforms detected in the river, specifically between 25 Ave SW and 9 Ave SE, AHS is advising people not to swim or wade in the water.

The public is also advised not to drink this untreated river water, as water-borne organisms, including fecal coliforms, can cause vomiting and diarrhea. In addition, skin, ear and eye infections can result from any contact with Elbow River water.

AHS found the elevated levels after some routine tests were conducted. They’ll continue to monitor the water and the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
