Calgary police arrest ninth suspect in relation to local gang violence

Calgary police have arrested and charged a ninth man in relation to gang violence and drug trade in the city.

Twenty-year-old Ahed Alwand is now facing eight charges, including two counts of attempted murder.

Police believe Alwand was involved in a shooting on Dec. 13, 2015, when two men were sitting in a parked vehicle on Coral Springs Close N.E., and another car drove by and shots were fired.

No one was injured in that incident.

According to police, this shooting was one of many between two groups of men connected to organized crime and drug trade.

All incidents between the two groups took place in January 2015 and May 2016.

Eight other men were arrested in May, facing a combined total of 50 charges, including multiple counts of attempted murder.
