ACAD students protest changes to timetable, understaffing

Students at the Alberta College of Art and Design are frustrated.

They gathered for a rally Monday on various issues that Organizer Jonah Derkson says have been having negative impacts for years.

“We have issues with funding, lack of clarity with our administration staff, being under-staffed. We have a great community here at ACAD. We have a lot of diverse artists that work here in Calgary and work in the greater contemporary field that feel like they’re not having their voices heard,” he said.

One recent change students have a problem with is the reduction of studio time from six hours to four and a half hours.

“They are implementing these changes without our consent. We have concerns that aren’t being met entirely,” Derkson said.

Acting VP of Research and Academic Affairs Alison Miyauchi told City News, she’s hoping to start a dialogue.

“I think that we could have done better on communication around registration this year, so I think that’s where a lot of these concerns popped up,” she said.

However, she says it goes both ways — ACAD students need to reach out to administration too, and do so directly.
