Eighteen recruits join the Calgary Fire Department

The Calgary Fire Department celebrates 18 new recruits joining their team.

A graduation ceremony took place at the Calgary Fire Department Training Academy in the S.E to honour the class of 2016 Thursday afternoon.

MLA for Calgary-Varsity Stephanie McLean took part in the ceremony and told the graduates it’s important to take care of themselves.

“I ask that you don’t forget about your own health and well-being the effects of facing danger on a daily bases should never be downplayed and post-traumatic stress disorder is real and has devastating effects on the health of first responders, their families and those close to them,” McLean said.

New graduate Ben Hillier says he’s confident about going into the field.

“Our training here is awesome and thorough really great staff, working with the guys you build a confidence that’s hard to even explain, reliance on your partners, you know it’s what we’re here for and we’re here to help Calgarians and guests of Calgary on their worst day.” Hillier said.

He adds it takes most people years to get to this point and now that it’s here it’s the end of one road and the beginning of another as they transition into their new role with the Calgary Fire Department.
