Summer storm blasts Calgary

A summer storm blew through Calgary Tuesday afternoon, with intense rain, hail, strong thunder and lightning lighting up the city.
Doppler radar indicated the severe thunderstorm was located about 10 km west of Canada Olympic Park and was moving toward the southeast at 30 km/h.
There was an unstable airmass is in place this afternoon over much of the province, and thunderstorms were ongoing in many parts of southern Alberta, not just Calgary.
Fire crews were kept busy with a number of lightning strikes, one of which is believed to have caused a two-alarm blaze in Strathcona Park.
Downtown near the 660 NEWS studios on 7th Ave. and 5th St. SW, the thunder shook the building.
The Calgary Fire Dept. also received many car crash calls during the storm.
