Blue-green Algae advisory issued for Severn Creek Reservoir

It’s another sign warm weather has arrived.

Alberta Health Services has issued another blue-green algae bloom advisory.

The latest covers two bodies of water, the Severn Creek Reservoir just north of Strathmore and Hastings Lake in Strathcona County.

Last week, a similar warning was issued for Eagle Lake, east of Calgary.

Medical Officer of Health Jason Cabaj said although the algae occurs naturally, environmental factors can make things worse.

“It’s worsened when there are nutrients in the water from the fertilizers or agricultural activities that allow it to flourish,” he said. “One of the main ways of preventing this is taking care of the watershed and preventing the nutrients from getting into the water.”

Blue-green Algae can cause a variety of health problems, ranging from skin irritation to vomiting or diarrhea.
