CalgaryNEXT group pushing for new NHL, CFL facilities makes pitch to council

The group that wants to build a new NHL arena and CFL stadium in Calgary wants to meet with city administrators to move the proposed project into the next phase.

Calgary Flames president Ken King made a presentation to Calgary city council Monday to refute a city report from last April that pegged the bill for the project at $1.8 billion — with taxpayers bearing as much as $1.3 billion of the financial load.

King says the $1.8 billion figure is a half-billion dollars too high.

He also points out that a fieldhouse-football stadium would be used by the public 94 per cent of the time.

King says he wants to move the discussion into the next phase with a formal proposal and to start negotiations.

He says the fact that Calgary is exploring a possible bid for the 2026 Olympics is just a “happy coincidence”.
