A legal battle is going ahead between TransCanada and the American government over the Keystone XL pipeline.
TransCanada is seeking more than 15 billion dollars in compensation from the U-S government under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
It’s over last year’s rejection of Keystone.
The Calgary-based company made a complaint in January, but it says talks with the government failed to reach an amicable settlement.
TransCanada contends the U-S government concluded numerous times that the pipeline would not have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions but rejected the project to appear strong on climate change.
It alleges that, as a signatory to NAFTA, the U-S government failed in its commitment to protect Canadian investors and ensure the company was treated in accordance with international law.
The U.S. has never lost a challenge under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
