Record number of cyclists raise awareness for mental health

A new record as over 7 thousand riders came out on Sunday to raise awareness to banish the stigma around mental illness.

The “Ride Don’t Hide” event held a number of riders from across Canada raising over 1.3 million dollars for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Celebrating the ride’s fifth year the event was held in 29 communities making it the country’s largest community ride for mental health awareness.

This year was Calgary’s third time participating, the city’s leg took part at Springbank Park.

The organizations ambassadors included five time Canadian cycling champion Mark Walers, NHL alumni players Shawn Antoski, Clint Malarchuk and Geoff Courtnall.

A barbecue lunch and other family friendly activities took place such as a bouncy castle, giant jenga and much more.

Studies show that one in five people or seven million Canadians will experience a mental health issue but only one-third of those people will seek help.
