New Brighton Athletic Park opens in southeast

Calgary’s newest athletic park opened Saturday in the deep southeast.

The New Brighton Athletic Park features natural turf fields, a baseball diamond, a couple of kiddy playgrounds, change rooms and public washrooms.

“It’s one of the largest in the city, if you think other places like Shouldice Park in the northwest,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “So this serves the entire quadrant of the city you can see it’s already in huge use, with soccer and there’s a baseball diamond here.”

Ward Alderman Shane Keating says the space is the first of a number of much needed amenities for the southeast quadrant of the city.

“In the next three years we’ll see the Quarry Park is going to be open, the South Seton Centre will be open, the New Brighton here is open, the Great Plains will be opening, and shortly after that we’ll be getting the Green Line,” he says.

New Brighton Athletic Park is a joint project between the city and province. Calgary contributed $3.5 million and the province funded $13.5 million.
