Flames draft and trade in round one of NHL Draft

What a start to the draft for the Calgary Flames.

They started things off by using their 6th overall pick to take Matthew Tkachuk, a member of the Memorial Cup champion London Knights.

Tkachuk says he is really excited to be drafted by such a great organization.

“The young talent they have and they’re an up and coming team and the new coach is awesome from what I’ve been hearing. And their management is great. There’s just a lot of really good guys in that organization and that’s what you need to build a winning team, you need the chemistry and it’s there in Calgary.

A short time later the Flames would swing a deal to bring St. Louis Blues veteran goaltender Brian Elliott to Calgary for the Flames 35th overall pick.

And in another local note, Calgary Hitmen defenceman Jake Bean was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes 13th overall.
