Opponents of proposed Springbank reservoir say they’ve been flooded with requests of for federal review

“Dontdamnspringbank.org”, a grassroots group formed to represent landowners, residents and others opposed to the proposed Springbank reservoir, say they’ve been “flooded” with requests for a federal review.

It’s part of an appeal they put out for their members to write letters to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.

“Over a thousand people have responded that they would like to see the federal government step in and do a review of the Springbank project, very heartening to have that occur,” said spokesperson Lee Drewry. “I think it means that the more people hear about this project, the more questions they have about it and the more they question it’s the right project to be doing.”

Drewry believes the federal review will be more thorough and consider all the alternatives, including the option to dam McLean Creek.

He’s confident the CEAA will find in their favour and agree with the group that McLean is the faster, cheaper and better option.

“Bragg Creek and Redwood Meadows are currently left to be protected by berms and with McLean Creek they’d be protected by the dam structure and Calgary’s still protected, so why not protect more people and protect them well?”

The long-time resident is hopeful this will allow for more transparency and allow them to see the options that were or weren’t considered.

“I think the one thing that I’m absolutely struck by is the number of people who took the time to write and say you need to step in and review this project.”
