Medically assisted dying to be discussed in Alberta legislature

Medically assisted dying will be debated in the Alberta legislature on Tuesday.

During a press conference Monday afternoon, Health Minister Brandy Payne said while it is federal legislation it is important to know what the framework will look like for Alberta.

“What would happen if there was no practictioner in a facility to provide medical aid in dying,” Payne explained. “Or, what kind of requirements would be in place for a review of a person’s application?”

The deadline for federal legislation on medically assisted dying is Monday, June 6th.

“We have had a number of Albertans who have applied for a court exemption,” Payne added. “A couple of those have been approved, a couple have not, and a couple are still making their way through the process. It’s a little unclear at this point how many people are waiting until after the June 6th date passes.”
