Final weekend to drop off yard waste for free at landfills

This is your last weekend to drop off your yard waste at the dumps for free.

The eight week program wraps up on Sunday, so if you haven’t brought in your fallen branches, leaves or grass clippings this is probably the weekend to do it.

But, in case you’re too busy, Sharon Howland with the City of Calgary Waste and Recycling department said there are other ways to dispose of it.

“You can always come to the landfills year-round with your yard waste. However, outside of the spring yard waste program dates, there is a charge that applies,” Howland explained. “It’s 35 dollars a metric tonne. As well, there is free yard waste disposal through the community cleanup. So we ask that residents visit calgary.ca and look for your nearest community cleanup event.”

Howland added that yard waste makes up one third of residential waste.

The city landfills are open 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week.

The only thing not accepted for free, is sod.
