Calgary Zoo unveils baby Gorilla’s name

The Calgary Zoo has decided on a name for its first baby gorilla born in eight years.

The baby girl born a few weeks ago now goes by the name Kimani.

To choose the name, zookeepers picked out three they liked and then put a vote out to the public on their website.

More than 47,000 people took part over the twelve days of voting.

Kimani is an African inspired name meaning beautiful and sweet, which is fitting since her parents’ names also both start with a ‘K’, Kioja, and Kakinga.

The zoo is happy to share this good news as a long-time leader Silverback gorilla, Kakinga passed away, and an older female Zuri had to have emergency surgery to treat a serve abdominal infection.

The Calgary Zoo says Zuri is slowly recovering and getting back to her usual self.
