Calgary Marathoners look to beat world records

Athletes are looking to set new world records this weekend at The Calgary Marathon.

They are looking to break six Guinness Book of World Records.

It’s all part of a fundraiser for mitochondrial disease, which affects the body’s ability to produce energy.

Spokesperson Blaine Penny told 660 NEWS this is a great way to raise awareness for the disease.

“So this is just another way we’re trying to do that and what we’ve got that’s really unique about this is having the treadmill set up at the Calgary Marathon Expo as everybody is walking through to pick up their race packages they will see us there and learn more about Mito Canada and mitochondrial disease and hopefully consider making a donation as well.” Penny said.

Blaine Penny talks about some of the records that could be broken during the race.

“Two solo runners, one of the men is going to attempt to run for 24 hours and break the world record of completing 257 km, and then we have an energetic young lady by the name of Ariel Fitzgerald who’s going to attempt the fastest 50 km and the fastest 100 km on the treadmill and establish I think some new records there.” Penny said.

Other records include most kilometres by a team of 12 on a treadmill.

All the action will take place at the Big Four building on the Stampede Grounds on Sunday.
