Donations to Fort McMurray victims surpass $100 million

The amount of money donated to the Fort McMurray wildfire relief efforts through the Canadian Red Cross has surpassed $100 million.

Jenn McManus, vice-president of the Canadian Red Cross in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, says the organization has received more money for Fort McMurray evacuees than it ever has.

“Effective (Wednesday) morning, the Canadian Red Cross has raised $104 million. The generosity of Canadians has been unprecedented,” she said. “This is officially our largest domestic appeal in the history of the national Canadian Red Cross Society. We continue to work alongside of local stakeholders, municipal government, and the Government of Alberta, in looking ahead at longer-term planning and recovery.”

McManus adds, the Red Cross will be working with Fort McMurray for years to come.

The federal government is also still matching all donations made to the organization, and will be until May 31st.

“We’re working on the terms of reference alongside of the Government of Alberta right now, and their matching program. What I know to date is that it’s most likely going to be individual gifts to the Canadian Red Cross for this appeal by Albertans.”

She adds, people continue to donate at a rapid pace, showing just how generous Canadians are during times of disaster.
