Calgary added to Rockefeller Foundation’s list of 100 resilient cities

Calgary has been awarded membership into a global group of 100 resilient cities.

The title was given to the city by the Rockefeller Foundation.

It means funding and resources are possible to unify current projects and initiatives to prepare or recover from social, environmental or economic disruptions.

Even though the city has dealt with adversity in the past, including the 2013 floods and a number of economic downturns, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said the city is certainly a resilient one, but more can be done to better position Calgary to deal with potential future shocks.

“We applied to be a member of this network because we know we can become even better,” Nenshi said in a statement. “This membership gives us access to some of the leading professional knowledge, analytical tools, planning expertise, and implementation services available in the world. What we learn through our participation in this network will translate into an even more resilient city for our citizens.”

The 100 Resilient Cities network was created in 2013 to help cities be better prepared to address stressors or sudden threatening and damaging events they could face.

Other Canadians cities are Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
