Prime Minister Trudeau lands in Fort McMurray

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has landed in Fort McMurray and has boarded a military helicopter for an aerial tour of the city that was hit by a wildfire last week.

He is also to get a first-hand look from the ground of one of the damaged neighbourhoods, as well as visit with first responders and volunteers.

Trudeau’s plans include a meeting with Alberta Premier Rachel Notley later on Friday.

It’s expected she will press the prime minister for enhanced employment insurance benefits for the Edmonton area as a consequence of the wildfire.

Ottawa is already fast-tracking EI claims from displaced Fort McMurray workers, many of whom have dispersed across the country.

More than 80,000 people were forced to flee their homes when fire ate its way into the oilsands city May 3.
