Calgary sends more help to fight wildfire

The City of Calgary has opened its doors wide to evacuees from the wildfires burning in Fort McMurray, but it’s also helping in other ways.

Tom Sampson, Chief of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, says they have a lot of people assisting with the fire.

“We have sixty people on the ground in our Emergency Management Centre up there (in Fort McMurray) right now with another hundred going,” he said.

He says Calgary has sent another 39 fire personnel, while bringing some home for a rest. Some police officers from Calgary are also on the way north to assist with long term planning.

About 1,500 evacuees have made their way to Calgary.

“We’ve got legendary facilities for people to stay in because the city and our partners have opened their doors, there are legendary things to do in the city at no charge,” Sampson said.

While tragic, he says this is a great time for Calgarians to show how good they can be as neighbours.
