Canadians’ enthusiasm for long-form census return crashes site

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau campaigned on the return of the long-form census, he probably didn’t know just how important an issue it was.

Just a day after census forms started arriving at homes, the census website crashed because of the volume of people rushing to fill out the online survey.

Ten years after the last long-form census was taken and five years since the Conservatives replaced it with the optional National Household Survey, over 15 million households have begun receiving census letters. And apparently a good percentage of those homeowners decided to complete the questionnaire online on Tuesday morning.

Trudeau himself stepped in to announce that the site was back up after a 45-minute outage:

But that didn’t really do much to curb the enthusiasm Canadians had for filling out the questionnaire.

Now if we could only get people this excited about other forms of public policy …
