Entire province under special weather statement regarding heat

According to Environment Canada, we’re in for some above-seasonal temperatures this week.

So much so, it has issued a special weather statement for all of Alberta:

Well above normal temperatures are expected to continue with some record high temperatures broken. Warm temperatures will remain in place into midweek. A cold front will move through central Alberta Wednesday and the southeast on Thursday lowering temperatures to slightly above normal.

These conditions pose a health risk when you are not used to the heat.

Everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults; infants and young children; and people with chronic illnesses.

The predicted high in Calgary is around 26 to 27 degrees for Tuesday, Wednesday and the weekend.

Adam Loria with EMS said that if you’re planning to work or play outdoors then start hydrating your system the day before with water.

In Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, it’s likely to get closer to 30.

“Wear waterproof sunscreen, SPF 30 at a minimum if possible. Apply that approximately 20 minutes before heading outside,” Loria explained. “Reapply frequently. Sunscreen does become used up. As well, sunscreen does have an expiry date, so you might want to check into that before applying.”

He added that paramedics do see an increase in calls when the first wave of hot weather arrives.
