Calgarians upset some vehicles aren’t towed away for street cleaners

You missed a spot.

That’s the complaint from Calgarians in Ward 4; frustrated neighbours are not moving their cars for street cleaners.

Sean Chu told council in question period Monday, he’s received tons of calls and e-mails also griping — despite promises of hefty tickets and tows — the city isn’t holding up its end of the bargain and hauling the vehicle away.

“And then afterwards, you know, they come out and they still have a lot of gravel on the road,” he said.

The city is running ahead of schedule when it comes to cleaning; as of Sunday night, crews were 89 per cent complete.

Transportation GM Mac Logan says unfortunately, they don’t have enough Calgary Parking Authority officers to head out with street cleaners every day.

“We do try to update the signs at least 24 hours before we’re out there, and update our website on a daily basis. However, I’m sure there may be some people who don’t notice that change,” he said.

Logan says the good news is the winter we had.

“The amount of material on the roads is far less than it has been in past years, so we’re working through the neighbourhoods more quickly than we typically have,” he said.

Despite the shortage of enforcement, over 1,000 vehicles have been towed off city streets so far.

Logan says the best areas for compliance are the northwest and southwest, while the most stubborn motorists are in the southeast and central districts of the city.
