A 19-year-old western lowland gorilla named Zuri is in critical condition at the Calgary Zoo.
In a statement Friday, officials said the animal had to be rushed into emergency surgery by veterinarians this week, after suffering from a severe abdominal infection.
Zookeepers had at first noticed subtle behaviour changes in the animal’s appetite and activity levels, before running tests on Wednesday.
“Due to her compromised state, her recovery has been very slow, and she is still in critical condition. Our Animal Care team continues to keep a close watch on her and we will provide updates when we can,” it read.
Western lowland gorillas can live to be more than 40 years old.
