Conservative leadership hinges on Rona Ambrose: poll

Canadians still love Justin Trudeau.

Those are the findings of a poll from Mainstreet for Postmedia which shows if an election were held today, 45 per cent would vote for the Liberals.

But the poll also looked at the Conservative leadership race and that’s where things get really interesting, because the results appear to hinge on Rona Ambrose.

Ambrose has the highest favourability rating out of nine plausible candidates, at 68 per cent

Former Defence Minister Peter MacKay comes in at 53 per cent and ‘Mr. Wonderful’ himself, Kevin O’Leary is at 48 per cent.

Were Ambrose to enter, the poll suggests she would start with a significant lead, 26 per cent support, with O’Leary in second, and MacKay in third.

If that happens, the big losers appear to be Lisa Raitt, and Kelly Leitch whom see their support greatly diminished.

But when you take Ambrose out of the equation, MacKay jumps in the lead with 23 per cent followed closely by O’Leary at 22 per cent.

Maxime Bernier and Tony Clement come in a distant third at eight per cent.
