Rancher questions Earls for not working enough with industry, before dropping Alberta beef

Some in the cattle industry are wondering why Earls didn’t even try working with ranchers before announcing it is now only using Certified Humane Beef and will be importing those products from Kansas, instead of Canadian producers.

Soderglen Ranches Cattle Manager Jared Sherman says the restaurant only uses about 2.5 million pounds of beef a year.

“You can source that within Alberta and within a 50 mile range of Calgary for goodness sakes. It’s whether or not these programs meet Earls’ requirements. And why hasn’t Earls reached out to the industry here in Alberta and in Canada to find out if whether or not we could work with them to source that volume of cattle? Shouldn’t be hard to do,” he says.

Sherman says Alberta ranchers, along with most in North American, follow the same standards outlined by a leading specialist in the industrty. So it’s unclear what Earls’ standards are.

“I don’t even know what that is. They actually haven’t come out and said ‘this is what we require, can you supply this to us,'” he says.

The leading specialist Sherman is referring to is Dr. Temple Grandin, who has helped shape the standards both here in Canada and the U.S.

In a statement Earls says they are basing their standards on Grandin’s specifications.
