Crowd gathers to remember workers who died on the job

A little over 100 people gathered at the Calgary Workers Memorial to remember those killed in the past year while on the job.

They gathered to mark the Day of Mourning and lay a wreath.

“I think it’s a good way for (us) as a community to come together and mourn and to show our support for those families who lost a loved one to their work,” said Alex Shevalier, president of the Calgary and District Labour Council.

“There were 124 workers that were accepted by the WCB, 14 farm workers were killed on the job and they were not included in the official statistics and we don’t know how many workers were killed who are registered under federal jurisdiction,” he said.

Shevalier added one of the main reasons they remember those they lost is to continue their fight in making the workplace safe.
