VIDEO: Calgary family say their loved ones centered out over “radicalization”

An outspoken advocate for anti-radicalization and sometimes critical of the government’s efforts; Christianne Boudreau has been told she may not be able to return home.

The Calgary-based mother made headlines after her son Damian Claremont was killed fighting for the Islamic State in Syria in 2014.

Boudreau and her younger son Luke have now been forced to surrender their passports in France and are now under investigation for what they’ve been told is a “child custody” issue.

Her brother Jean-Marc is breaking his silence, he believes his sister is being unfairly targeted for her views.

“I personally don’t think it’s a matter of the single parent, I think it might be (…) there’s possibilities maybe it’s time to sweep the issue under the table about radicalization and move onto the next story,” he said. “I dunno, that’s speculation but something’s not right and something has to be done and answered.”

Both Boudreau and her son were born in Nova Scotia, they had been living in Calgary and only recently moved to France to take advantage of the supports available in Europe.

She had the permission of the Calgary Courts to travel as “she sees fit” and there was only one parent listed on the boy’s birth certificate.

“As soon as she got to France, the Canadian government revoked her passport because there was no signature on his birth certificate,” he said.

The younger sibling says it’s a big shock considering she’s travelled with the boy before internationally and has never had an issue before.

“It’s a big shock and it’s a pretty unjust shock! She hasn’t had a very good time with the Canadian government. For years now since Damian’s passing, she’s been trying to get a hold of them and has been using emails, phones and letters to no avail. The only choice really is to go publicly and ask the prime minister for some help.”

He’s written a letter to the Justin Trudeau.

“Damian was a good kid, Christianne is a beautiful woman, she has a beautiful heart and what she’s doing for the world is amazing and it’s just really unfair that she’s not allowed to possibly come back to Canada for ten years.”

“She wants to help people, she really wants to help people and she took the world under her wing (…) it’s not good that she’s being stopped from doing this,” he said tearfully.

Boudreau has nine countries she’s supposed to visit including Spain, the United Kingdom, Jordan, Israel and all of that has been put on hold.

“It’s time something gets answered,” he said referencing his appeal to Prime Minister Trudeau. “If the Prime Minister doesn’t listen and answer, I’m asking the public’s support to sign petitions when they’re available.”
