Calgarians beam aboard Comic and Entertainment Expo

Wookies, Storm Troopers and more than a few Harry Potters will invade Calgary this weekend for the Comic and Entertainment Expo.

102,000 muggles turned up last year, and even though tickets for Saturday are already sold out, Emily Expo says there is still a lot of room at the Cantina.

“There are still tickets available for Friday and Sunday and now that the Saturday is sold out, those are starting to go fast as well, so I would recommend people purchase those ahead of time,” she said.

She says they’ve tried to do their best in helping people navigate the economic troubles.

“We had early bird tickets available for quite a while at a lesser-rate than purchasing closer to the show in a response to help people out who may have been in a different position than last year,” said. Ms. Expo.

Even though Peter Mayhew will be here, better known as Chewbacca, this year’s Expo will be marking a special anniversary: 50 years of Star Trek, complete with the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner.

“We also have Connor Trinneer and Garret Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill and Karl Urban as well from the new movies, so it’s a good year for Trek fans for sure,” she said.

Getting the show just right is kind of like trying to bring balance to The Force.

“It really is a fine balance of trying to bring in new things that are current as well as brining in the things that have always worked and the fans have always wanted to see,” Ms. Expo explained. “You also want to create that loyal vendor base and exhibitor base.”

Even though the doors open at 4 p.m. Thursday, the big kick-off ‘Parade of Wonders’ is Friday morning.

“Mayor Nenshi will be there of course, because I don’t think it would be the same without him, and a few other surprises along the way,” she said.
