National Energy Board approves Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement pipeline

The National Energy Board has given the go ahead to Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement pipeline into the U.S.

A approval is subject to 89 conditions, which have to be met.

The rebuild would replace the 1,660-kilometre pipeline that is almost a half a century old and is expected to cost $7.5 billion.

Director of Oilsands for Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Terry Abel says the approval by the NEB should be a signal to officials south of the border.

“I think they’ve done a thorough review, they’ve identified conditions but it should be a signal to all. You understand, there isn’t a presidential approval required because that segment, across the border, has already been taken over,” said Abel. “I think all companies are ensuring the safety of their lines and ensuring that they operate safely and reliably.”

Once completed, the pipeline would permit 760,000 barrels a day to be shipped from Hardisty, Alberta, to Superior, Wisconsin.

Although the NEB has given the green light, the U.S. has separate permitting processes that the project must undergo before construction can begin.
