Conservative Party of Canada lowers membership fees after complaint from veteran MP

After being called out by one of its own, the Conservative Party of Canada has decided to undo a controversial change.

In a release, the party said the $10 annual membership fee hike, from $15 to $25, will no longer be in place.

A few weeks before Saturday’s announcement, Calgary Forest Lawn MP Deepak Obhrai said the party was becoming an “elitist, white-only club.”

Obhrai says the changes are giving people what they’ve asked for.

“This is one way where the grassroots people have spoken and the council has listened and I think this does well for the democracy,” Obhrai said.

The party will also drop fees for two and five year memberships.

In the release, the party said the increase in costs was made with the intention of encouraging longer-term sign ups. The release added, the party takes pride in listening to feedback from grassroots Conservatives, which is why the costs were cut.
